For a lot of us getting HBO into our homes was a dream come true as a kid- especially us kids into movies. Back then there were no multiple HBO channels. Which meant we would watch movies we generally may not have bothered given flashier options more in line with our age demo… I remember begrudgingly watching the Elephant Man one boring night as a kid and it had a profound impact on me… And these guides were like keys to the magical world of so many movies! Thank you so much, what a blast from the past! I lived well outside city limits in a trailer park but stayed a few memorable nights over at a friend’s and my sister’s and got to see HEAVY METAL (beyond blown away) and a frightening night of MAD MAX (the first movie, which was like a horror film to a young boy) and AMITYVILLE HORROR. This was just before the VCR craze really hit hard. You were just as inclined to see homes with LASERDISC players in them. When that HBO logo came flying in and turning with that awesome music, you typically had some Jiffy Pop popcorn and Coke ready, it was going to be a big night. Adults were either asleep or out and HBO didn’t care if adolescent boy minors were watching, HEAVY METAL was going to run.
We moved from the country into a town that got cable and HBO when I was like 11, man it was the best.
